Piaget Returns to Polo as Title Sponsor of USPA Gold Cup at International Polo Club Palm Beach

WELLINGTON, FL (February 20, 2007) – Piaget, the world-renowned watchmaker and jeweler, returns to the South Florida polo scene in a major way as title sponsor of the 26-goal USPA Gold Cup at International Polo Club Palm Beach. The tournament’s official title will be the USPA Piaget Gold Cup.

“Piaget and International Polo Club are a perfect match for each other and we are very pleased with the partnership,” said Michael C. Brown, general manager at International Polo Club.

The USPA Piaget Gold Cup, which began in 1974, is one of the most prominent tournaments in the United States. This is its first season at International Polo Club Palm Beach, the foremost high-goal polo club in the country. The final is scheduled for Sunday, March 25 at 3 p.m. on Stanford Field at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

At least 13 teams are expected to enter the USPA Piaget Gold Cup, making it one of the most competitive tournaments in the world.

Russ McCall’s New Bridge La Dolfina won the 2006 tournament, which was held in Aiken, South Carolina. However, McCall and New Bridge are not competing in the 2007 tournament.

Long-time polo observers will remember this tournament as the coming-out party for Adolfo Cambiaso as the then-15-year-old won his first major title in the United States in 1991 as a member of the Cellular One team. Cambiaso won his sixth title in 2006 with New Bridge La Martina in Aiken, South Carolina.

Peter Brant’s White Birch team has won this event a record 12 times. Current 10-goaler Mariano Aguerre has won has name engraved on the trophy eight times, more than any other professional player, all while playing for White Birch. The legendary Gonzalo Pieres, Aguerre’s father-in-law, has won the tournament seven times, also all with White Birch, and Alfonso Pieres has won it five times.

Brant and Aguerre will team up again for White Birch as they try to win the trophy they last hoisted in 2004. Cambiaso, along with 9-goaler Matias Magrini, will be playing for George Rawlings’ Crab Orchard.

The polo matches are open to the public. General admission for the Sunday games at International Polo Club Palm Beach is $10 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the game or in advance at the stadium box office.

International Polo Club Palm Beach is located at 3667 120th Avenue South, between Pierson Road and Lake Worth Road in Wellington. For information, directions or ticket purchases, please call the club at (561) 204-5687 or visit the website at www.internationalpoloclub.com.
