Bendabout Beats
Lechuza in Hall of Fame Cup
April 11, 2008
WELLINGTON, FL – Bendabout overcame a four goal
handicap advantage to defeat Lechuza Caracas 13-12 in
Hall of Fame Cup subsidiary tournament play of the US
Open Polo Championship at International Polo Club Palm
Beach today.
Lechuza Caracas and Bendabout entered this portion
of the tournament looking to recover from their 0-2
records that eliminated them from advancing in the US
Open. Lechuza captain Victor Vargas revamped his line-up
by dropping Sebastian and Pite Merlos for Guille Aguero,
Sapo Caset and Nicholas Espain. prior to the start of
the open. Many considered this a daring move since his
team’s rating dropped from a 26 goal handicap
to 22 goals. The open is played on the flat, as the
name implies, and the handicap difference not awarded.
Still Lechuza played well losing its two games by only
three goals. The Hall of Fame Cup is a handicapped tournament
and Bendabout a 26 goal team who had trouble scoring
earlier had to award Lechuza four goals at the start
of the game.
The opening chukker began with Lechuza scoring first
and Bendabout only able to capitalize on a penalty goal
by Negro Astrada to fall even further behind 6-1. The
ensuing chukkers saw the tide slowly change as Bendabout’s
Captain Gillian Johnston rallied her team on a 6 to
2 run to finish the half one back 8-7. The two teams
exchanged goals the next two chukkers.
In the final chukker, following two penalty goals
by Miguel Astrada, Bendabout, had tied it up at 11.
Johnston again went to work scoring two more times to
put victory in her team’s grasp. Sapo Caset added
his sixth goal of the day for Lechuza in the final moments
to end the game 13-12. Johnston had her best day of
the season as she finished with six field goals of her
own.
