WELLINGTON, FL— Patagones’s Carlos Gracida scored three goals in the final chukker to win the second game of the opening Joe Barry Memorial Tournament at International Polo Club Palm Beach.
Patagones, who won14-12 over tournament newcomer Lucchese, was trailing by three goals at the top of the sixth when Gracida scored three of the final four goals. The final goal was scored by teammate Carlos Avendano who intercepted a penalty-blocking shot by opposing Andres Weisz with less than two minutes remaining.
“We were down three goals with four minutes to go and I told Carlos to go all out,” said team Captain Gonzalo Avendano.
“Gonzalo just told us to go for it, and we just went,” said Gracida who credits his horse Legend for the win. “She’s amazing.”
With the victory, Patagones advances to the semi-finals and will play again on Wednesday, January 14. Tomorrow’s continuation of the Joe Barry Memorial will feature Mt. Brilliant/Faraway who will take on BTA at noon at International Polo Club Palm Beach. The Stanford Stadium’s opening day game will pit Isla Carroll against actor Tommy Lee Jones’s San Saba team at 3 p.m. and will include an array of festivities.
For the sixth year in a row International Polo Club Palm Beach is proud to present Wellington Day, honoring the local community at its official Sunday opening with fanfare that will include skydivers, champagne, ice cream and other entertainment at halftime.
The Joe Barry Memorial has seven teams competing for the cup dedicated to Hall of Fame Player Joe Barry who won almost every major polo tournament in the World.
